Visualizing Traffic Fatalities in Washington DC at a block level
Visualizing Traffic Fatalities in Washington DC at a block level

What if you could map every traffic accident from the last few years, by severity & type of vehicles?

Project Context

  • Type: Part of Smart City initiative at Mapbox, in collaboration with District Department of Transportation (DDoT) at Washington D.C.
  • Duration: 2 months
  • My role: Geo-visualization & front-end development

About the project

I collaborated with Christina Franken & the wonderful Geo Data Scientist Erica Fischer in visualizing traffic accidents across Washington DC for 3 years, and using Machine Learning to predict intersections that would continue to have high accidents unless an intervention was made.

I designed the experience, and stitched together a quick front-end code to make this interactive — across zoom levels & type of accidents. The zoomed-in view would show individual accidents as dots, sized by how many folks were in the accident, and colored by the severity.
