Project Brief

NDA launched Namami Ganga project to clean the river Ganga, but has it made an impact? How would this focus on a single river impact other polluted rivers?

Project Context

  • Type: Collaboration with Harsha Devulapalli from Mint
  • Duration: 1 week
  • My role: Co-created geo-visualizations of India & Ganges river basin

About the project

I got a chance to work on a full page story for Mint, an Indian newspaper focused on data-driven journalism. Harsha & I had always spoken about our desire to create some beautiful map visualizations in print, and this became a perfect opportunity to do so.

Over a week, the Mint team analyzed data & highlighted that the Namami Ganga project was not improving the river quality after 4 years of its launch. To highlight this, I created a geo-visualization of the entire Ganga river basin, highlighting key cities as gray circles that were sized by their population. I also highlighted the status of pollution monitoring centres across the river.

Harsha & I also worked on making a map of every river in India (thanks to OSM data), and highlighted the most polluted stretches of rivers identified by Central Pollution Control Board in 2018. This showed how several rivers across the country need interventions, not just Ganga river.
